Ponytails are always a great, easy hairstyle to do when you are short on time but still want to look pulled together. It works fantastic whether your hair is freshly washed or a couple days out from your last wash and needs a little refreshing. And done right, the slicked-back pony can look fabulous for a night out as well. Styling a Slicked-Back Pony
Prepare your hair. If your hair isn’t freshly washed, it can be helpful to spritz a bit of dry shampoo into it before you start, unless you’re going for the wet look, in which case, this step is not needed.
Determine placement and start to brush. You can style your pony low by the nape of the neck, high on the crown, or anywhere in between. A comb isn’t really adequate for smoothing your hair sufficiently for this look. Grab a good boar bristle brush which will really smooth down your hair and eliminate static. Brush hair in the desired direction of the base of your pony, and secure with an elastic.
Add shine if desired. If you’re looking for a high-shine, slick look, spritz on a bit of leave-in conditioner or shine oil. Smooth in gently using your hands.
Secure the look with hairspray. To eliminate the potential for flyaways and frizz cropping up as the day goes on, apply a generous amount of hairspray to hold your slicked-back hair in place.
Fun Variations for Your Slicked-Back Pony
Swoop it. The easiest pony to do is to simply slick your hair straight back away from your face. But another fun style is to imitate the look of side swept bangs by using a comb to separate off a portion of your hair in front, and then swooping it to the side, over one eye.
Add hair extensions. If your hair isn’t long enough to do a proper pony, or if you simply want to add more drama, grab a ponytail extension in the same color as your hair. Even if you’ve never worn any kind of hairpiece, they are easy to wrap around your own ponytail and amp up the glamour.
Pouf it. You can simply slick back the entire length of your ponytail for a simple, sleek look, but you can also go the opposite direction and tease out your ponytail to create a dramatic contrast to the slicked-back portion on your scalp. To pump up the volume on your pony, use a bit of texture spray and a rattail comb to go big!
Other options: Braid it, do a side part, add some accessories, add some temporary color. Use a few mini elastics or scrunchies along the length of your ponytail and then gently pull the sections apart to create a bubble pony. Have fun!
