How to Do Hair Highlights at Home

Many of us have been doing more DIY, at-home beauty treatments these days, and hair coloring is no exception. But if you want to bleach or highlight your hair at home, that is a bit trickier and should be approached with caution. However, it can be done. If this is something you’d like to attempt yourself at home, read on for some advice on how to do this successfully and safely.

The Rules for DIY Hair Highlighting

If this is your first attempt at doing highlights, choose a shade that is just a little bit lighter than your natural color, nothing too drastic. You can also stick to just the front part of your hair around your face, which is the easiest place to blend it in with your natural color. The darker your hair, the more careful you need to be so that you don’t end up looking stripey or brassy.

Gather your tools.

You will need hair color foils, vinyl gloves and a color brush. DON’T try to use plain old aluminum foil from your kitchen in place of foils designed specifically for hair highlighting. Kitchen foil will speed up the lightening process and potentially damage your hair.

Choose your highlighter.

We love Scruples Illusionist Brilliant Crème Highlights PBX Hair Color, but whatever product you choose, be sure to follow the instructions that come with your highlighting product exactly. Real highlights involve bleach and there are risks involved, so please be careful!

Every product is designed to work slightly differently, so just because you saw a YouTube video that demonstrated a particular technique doesn’t mean that it will work for the product you have. Read the instructions thoroughly before you begin and don’t stray from them.

When in doubt about how long to leave the foils in place, less is more. Better to get a more subtle result than end up going too light and damaging your hair.

Add some lowlights.

After you’ve gotten confident in your home highlighting game, you may want to start adding some lowlights as well. We like Wella Color Charm Demi Permanent Hair Color for perfect lowlights.

Keep hair hydrated.

Alterna temporary highlightsHair that has been bleached needs to be properly cared for with color-safe and sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. The bleaching process is drying, so be sure to condition your hair regularly with a color-safe moisturizing product.

Try some no risk, no commitment highlights.

If you don’t feel comfortable attempting your own highlights at home, no worries! You can still try out the look without risking any damage or bad permanent results when you use a temporary highlighter like Alterna Stylist 1 Night Highlights. Just brush in and wash out.
