The Pro Guide to Trimming Your Hair Between Salon Visits

Help extend your haircut and reduce the number of trips to the salon by perfecting a great at-home trimming technique. A good trim not only keeps hair looking better, it helps eliminate split ends and keeps your hair healthy between visits to the stylist.

Step-by-Step Hair Trimming Guide

Washing hairStep 1: Wash your hair. If you are prone to tangles and frizz, condition as well.

Step 2: Lightly towel hair dry so that it is damp but not soaking wet. Have a spray bottle filled with water to keep hair from drying out too much as you work.

Step 3: Put a towel around your shoulders to catch trimmed hair. You may also want to place another towel or tarp on the floor.

Step 4: Thoroughly brush hair out to remove any knots or tangles. Work in some leave-in conditioner or detangler if needed. Start brushing or combing at the ends and work your way up to avoid creating major tangles or clumps.

Step 5: Part your hair into upper and lower sections by drawing a comb above one ear, around your head and over to the other ear. Comb that top section of your hair forward over your face. Secure it over your forehead with an elastic or a clip.

Step 6: Separate the back section of your hair into two approximately even sections. Run your comb from one ear to the other, securing the upper section with another elastic or clip, and leaving the bottom-most section loose.

Trimming hairStep 7: Using your non-cutting hand (the opposite hand of whichever will be holding the scissors), pinch off a small section of hair, about 2-3 inches wide, and comb or brush it straight, re-wetting if needed. Pinch this section between index and middle finger, sliding to the hair ends, leaving about an inch of hair showing (unless you intend to do a more aggressive trim).

Step 8: With clean, sharp hair shearing scissors, cut off the hair ends parallel to your fingers. This is your guide cut and you will use it to compare to the next section.

Step 9: Pinch off a new section of hair, including a little bit of the section you just cut. You should be able to see an obvious mismatch between the trimmed and untrimmed hair. Use the previously trimmed hair to guide you on where to cut this next section. Repeat Step 9 as you work your way through the entire lower section.

Now repeat steps 7-9 for the middle section of hair and then the upper section as well.

You’re done!
